If you have your financial house in order, the recession is a veritable buffet of cheap stocks to choose from. Even though there were some tense moments in the last couple of years in the financial markets, things always eventually get better. The key is not to be spooked and to do your due diligence homework. It also helps if you have some emergency funds saved up as all financial advisors tell you.
Some people might bemoan the fact that the companies in which they had invested in are losing share price. However, for the seasoned investor, they see an opportunity to pick up more shares of an undervalued stock.
The fact is, we will see 6 or 7 recessions in our lifetime as Warren Buffett predicted. These are golden opportunities to pick up long term stocks when they are cheap.
During the credit crunch, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped to the lowest that it had been for more than a decade. And a year later, it popped back up again. People it seems have awfully loose hands and couldn’t hold put their stock portfolios. Don’t let this happen to you in selling stocks for a lost. Instead, you want to find or buy more of value stocks for long term.
Now obviously, the question to ask is how you find value stocks? This question is not trivial but it is also a very simple question. The answer is simply you do your research. You go through the financial statements and the annual reports. You phone the company and speak to investor relations. Sure, you might get a bias view but then you also want to follow this up with phoning their competitors. Does the information compare in cross analysis? You really have to wonder how many people actually do their due diligence or they trust the stock tip of a friend of a friend of an uncle.
There is no secret to investing. Like anything else, it relies on doing the homework but the monetary rewards are worth it. So, there really isn’t any thing to fear in investing in a recession as long as you know what you are doing.
